HALAL FOOD NEWS IN THE PRESS ON THE EVE OF EID …


Prior to Eid, Cihan News Agency and Anadolu Agency carried out interviews with GIMDES president H.K.BÜYÜKÖZER upon previous requests, which was issued in the media. The following news is a compilation of selected segments from both agency’s interviews:
Interest in Halal products is vastly growing all over the world and in Turkey. Cerrtain responsible brands, that are aware of this trend, are in the process of aquiring documents regarding the religious acceptability of these products. Applications to institutions, that determine the Halal status of food and non-food products, are doubling in numbers.
Food and Consumer Products Inspection and Certification Association’s (GIMDES) president, Hüseyin Kami Büyüközer, has stated that applications in 2011 were approximately 500 in number, that this figure is now exceeding a total of 500-600 applications, and that it is expected to reach a final number of 1000 applications in December of this year. He also stated that 90% of these applications were from Turkey and followed by saying:
“Of course, this does not guarantee a Halal certificate. If the firm is unable to meet the requirements, then it can not aquire the certificate. However, it is certain that intrests in Halal product documentation is increasing, both in the local and international arena. There were demans from GIMDES from Malawi and South Korea. On the other hand, there are those sending requests from Germany, Russia, Slovenia, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria”
“THE POTENTIAL OF HALAL FOOD IN TURKEY IS ABOUT 70 BILLION DOLLARS”
The Halal product sector’s growth is dependant on consumer trends. GIMDES President Büyüközer stated that Halal food and non-food industry in the whole world reaches a value of two trillion dollars. Moreover, he mentioned that in Europe alone, this figure is equivalent to 70 billion dollars.
Büyüközer said that Turkish food exports is 14 billion dollars, of which, a 4 billion dollar value belongs to GIMDES’s Halal certified companies.e.
HALAL CERTIFICATE COSTS AROUND 1.500-3000 TURKISH LIRAS
Halal certification requires certain conditions. Submission of the required documentation is mandatory to caryy out the laboratory inspections. Companies that apply to GIMDES, can receive the Halal certificate within one week. The Institute charges around 1.500-3000 Liras for inspection expenses.
The majority of companies who demand halal certificate are flour and flour products companies. This is followed by meat and meat products then milk and milk products companies.
The distribution of most prominent sectors that apply to GIMDES for Halal food certificate are as follows:

1. Flour and flour-products – 22%
2. Meat and meat-products – 17%
3. Milk and milk-products – 16%
4. Sweets, confectionary and chocolate – 12%
5. Natural flavourings and colourings – 7%
6. Jam and Halva – 11%
7. Cosmetics – 5%
8. ketchup, mayonnaise, tomato paste, dries fruits, water, etc – 5%
9. Vegetable oils – 5%
