The hadiths of our Prophet (PBUH) regarding our food and drink are very instructive. We list what we have identified as follows.
“Every piece of meat obtained from haram food deserves to be burned in the fire of Hell.” “There is accountability for lawful earnings and punishment for unlawful ones.” It is narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that:
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said in Mecca during the year of its conquest:
“Allah and His Messenger have made the buying and selling of wine, meat from dead animals, pork, and idols (statues) unlawful.”
It was asked of the Noble Messenger:
“O Messenger of Allah, what is the ruling on the internal fat of an animal that died of natural causes? The internal fat of such animals is used to polish ships, grease leather, and people also make candles with it for lighting.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied:
“No, do not trade in the fat of an animal that died unnaturally! This trade is forbidden.” After this, when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “This transaction is haram,”
“May Allah curse the Jews! When Allah made the fat of dead animals unlawful, they melted it, sold it, and added to its price.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Page 537)
It was narrated from Abu Sa’lebet al-Husayni (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said, “I once asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him):
“O Prophet of Allah! We are in the land of a People of the Book. Can we Muslims use their vessels and eat from them?” The Noble Messenger replied:
“If you find eating utensils other than those belonging to the People of the Book, do not eat from their utensils. If you cannot find anything other than their utensils, wash the utensils of the People of the Book and eat from them!” (Sahih al-Bukhari – Volume 12, Page 12, Hadith No. 1974)
“Whoever’s body is formed from unlawful food, Hell is the best place for that body.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Taberani, via Said ibn Yazid, from Umar ibn al-Khattab)
A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about alcohol. Our Prophet forbade him from drinking it. Upon this, the man said, “I only use it as medicine.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied, “It is not a cure, it is the disease itself.” (Sahih Muslim, Musnad Ahmad)
“Every intoxicating drink is alcohol, and every alcohol is forbidden.”
(Abu Dawud – Sahih Muslim)
“A small amount of what intoxicates in large quantities is also forbidden.”
Abu Dawud – Tirmidhi
“Undoubtedly, Allah has sent down both the disease and the cure for it; He has created a remedy for every disease. Therefore, treat yourselves, but do not treat yourselves with what is forbidden!”
Abu Dawud
“Undoubtedly, Allah has not placed your cure in things He has made unlawful for you.” (He has not placed the cure in such substances.)
Bukhari – Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him)
Jibril (peace be upon him) said: “Allah has cursed the drink, its maker, its producer, its drinker, its carrier, the one to whom it is carried, its seller, its buyer, its server, and the one who makes others drink it.”
(Hakim)
“May Allah curse alcohol, the drinker, the server, the seller, the buyer, the one who squeezes it and the one who is squeezed, the carrier, the one to whom it is carried, and the one who consumes its price.”
(Abu Dawud)
“May Allah curse alcohol, those who drink it, those who distribute it, those who sell it, those who buy it, those who press the grapes, those who press it for themselves, those who carry it, those to whom it is carried, and those who consume its price.”
(Tirmidhi)
“Let not one who believes in Allah (the Exalted) and the Hereafter drink alcohol, nor sit at a table where alcohol is drunk.”
(Tabarani)
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is no doubt that Allah the Almighty is pure, but He accepts only those who are pure. The Almighty has commanded the believers to do what He has commanded His Prophets.
Allah the Almighty said to the Prophets:
“O Prophets, eat pure and lawful food. Do good and righteous deeds.”
And to the believers:
“O believers, eat from the pure and lawful foods We have provided for you.”
Then the Noble Messenger (peace be upon him) said regarding this:
“A man who has traveled in the way of Allah, his clothes covered in dust, raises his hands to the heavens and cries out, ‘O Lord, O Lord!’ Yet what he eats is unlawful, what he drinks is unlawful, what he wears is unlawful, and his sustenance is unlawful. How can such a person’s prayer be accepted?”
(Muslim)
