Article 5, paragraph b, of the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Non-Alcoholic Beverages states: “In beverages covered by this Communiqué, the amount of ethyl alcohol that may arise from the nature of production must not exceed 3.0 g/L, the amount of lactic acid must not exceed 0.6 g/L, and the amount of volatile acids must not exceed 0.4 g/L.” In other words, this article tells us that beverages labeled as non-alcoholic can contain up to 3 grams of alcohol per thousand.
When we look at the formulation of carbonated beverages like cola and soda, we see flavorings and sweeteners. Manufacturers add ethyl alcohol to ensure a homogeneous mixture of these flavorings and sweeteners within the product. Ethyl alcohol is considered haram (forbidden) under Islamic law due to its intoxicating properties.
That’s why, since its inception, GIMDES has never certified any alcoholic beverage. No brand of carbonated beverage, such as cola or soda, has ever received certification from GIMDES, even if the brand’s other products are certified. As GIMDES, we want to warn our people and ask them not to believe claims like, “So-and-so brand’s cola is certified by GIMDES.”
