What is Astragalus?

Astragalus (Huang qí or milkvetch) is known for its use in traditional Chinese medicine. Although there are more than 2,000 astragalus species, only two are used in food supplements: Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus mongholicus. The root of the plant is utilized to make many different forms of supplements, including liquid extracts, capsules, powders and teas.

The root contains many active plant compounds that are believed to be the sources for its potential benefits. For example, its active compounds can help strengthening the immune system and reducing inflammation.

Although the scope of the studies on Astragalus is to a limited extent, it is beneficial in treating colds, seasonal allergies, heart conditions, kidney disease, chronic fatigue and more.

Astragalus is a herbal supplement that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Ayrıca kalp rahatsızlıklarının, böbrek hastalığının ve daha fazlasının tedavisinde yardımcı olmak için kullanılır.

Strengthening the Immune System

Astragalus contains beneficial plant compounds that can boost your immune system.

The primary role of the immune system is to protect the body against harmful invaders, including bacteria, microbes and viruses, which can cause disease.

Some evidence suggests that astragalus can increase the production of white blood cells, which are responsible for disease prevention in the immune system.

In animal studies, it has been shown to help killing bacteria and viruses in mice, which the astragalus root is injected.

Although the research is limited, Astragalus can help improving immune system to prevent and fight bacterial and viral infections, including colds, in human.

Improving Heart Functions

Astragalus can help improving heart function in those with certain heart conditions. It is thought to expand the blood vessels and increase the amount of blood pumped from the heart. In a clinical study, patients with cardiac insufficiency were given astragalus along with traditional therapy. They experienced more improvement in heart function than those who received only standard treatment.

In addition, some studies suggest that astragalus may reduce symptoms of myocarditis, an inflammatory condition of the heart. However, the findings are mixed showing positive and negative results. Although research findings are mixed, astragalus can help improve heart function and reduce symptoms of myocarditis in patients with cardiac insufficiency.

Mitigating the Side Effects of Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy has many negative side effects. According to some studies, Astragalus can help alleviate some of them.

For example, in a clinical study on people receiving chemotherapy, it is found that astragalus administered reduced nausea by 36%, vomiting by 50% and diarrhea by 59%.

Similarly, some studies have also shown the benefits of the herb for nausea and vomiting in patients receiving chemotherapy for colon cancer.

Controlling Blood Sugar Level

Active compounds in the Astragalus root can help lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. In fact, it has been described as the most commonly prescribed herb to help manage diabetes in China.

In animal and in vitro studies, astragalus has been shown to improve sugar metabolism and lower blood sugar levels. In a study on animals, it also led to weight loss. Although more research is required, studies in humans show the similar effects up to now.

Studies show that astragalus supplements can help controlling the blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, more research is needed.

Improve Kidney Functions

Astragalus can support kidney health by improving blood flow and laboratory markers of kidney function, such as protein measurements in urine.

Proteinuria is a condition in which there is an abnormal amount of protein in the urine and it is a sign of kidney damage or failure. Astragalus has been shown to heal proteinuria in several studies involving individuals with kidney disease. It can also be beneficial to prevent infections in people with reduced kidney function. There is no official consensus for the recommended doses of Astragalus. Dosages depend on the cases. Therefore, it should be taken under the supervision of a physician.

It could also be beneficial in treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome and seasonal allergies.

Astragalus can mitigate the symptoms of chronic fatigue and seasonal allergies. Astragalus root supplements can be found in many different forms. Available as supplements, capsules and liquid extracts. The root can also be made into a powder that can be brewed in tea.

It would be easier to drink and more beneficial to the health by mixing it with Keveni Thyme Honey.
