THE GREAT MASJID OF UNIVERSE

A little bit contemplation…

THE GREAT MASJID OF UNIVERSE (Universe Masjid-i Kebir)

Prof. Dr. Mustafa NUTKU

On Friday, July 24, 2020, the name of the “Hagia Sophia Masjid Kabeer”, the reopening of which we waited with enthusiasm and excitement for about 86 years, reminded me one of my previous article which the name “Masjid Kabeer” was mentioned.

Years ago, when I was going to England on a temporary mission, I took with me the book of Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen, “The Great Islamic Ilm Al-Hal”, as it is obligatory for all Muslims to know the knowledge of Ilm Al-Hal. That book mentioned the existence of Allah as it is shown below:

Many proofs are written in the science of Kalam (Akaid) and in philosophy books to prove the existence of Allah Almighty. It is sufficient to contemplate the deep meaning of the following ayah in this issue: “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.” (Ali ‘Imran, 190).

If this ayah is contemplated properly, we can witness numerous proofs for the existence, qudrath and quwwah of Allah Almighty. Those who consider the information from the sciences such as astronomy, cosmography, biology, chemistry, spirituality (psychology) and anatomy can think very well of pieces of evidence indicated by this ayah.

Anyone thinking with wisdom on these matters will inevitably understand that there is no other way, but accepting the existence of Allah. So, the above ayah informs us about the reality and warns us while the next ayah depicturing the people having real wisdom and understanding: “Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

All these ayaat also demonstrate the importance of reason and thinking in Islam. The religion of Islam is completely in accordance with wisdom and hikmah. Judgment and criticism cannot change its right measure. Islam is the religion of thinking people.

Wise people are those who think of the heavens, the earth, the day and night, the glory of the stars that shine in the skies, where each one is thousands of times larger than the sun, and the countless living and non-living creatures on earth. They think how the pleasant days and calm nights keep chasing each other in order and measure obeying the law of creation. As a result of such contemplation, the person cannot avoid accepting the qudrat and grandeur of Almighty Allah, who gives the order and measure of the universe, and submits himself to Allah willingly.

Even thinking about not such great creatures, but a microbe that tries to continue its life and duty even though it is smaller than a tiny bit or an atom that has its own universe in his very small body will be sufficient for a wise people to recognize the great qudrat and hikmah of Allah. Would all these beautiful and interesting beings, which are created in a supreme order and harmony, come into existence randomly? Or, are these the work of a nature that is imagined or devoid of knowledge and wisdom? Never. No rational person can come to such a wrong judgment. ”

The revelation of this ayah of Surah Ali ‘Imran and the following ones are mentioned in various authentic hadith books.

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.” (Ali ‘Imran, 190)
